After months of hard work and planning THE 9th Annual Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon is finally happening tomorrow!!!

If you have never been to one of these, this is a great year to start! I am really excited about the group of people coming out, it looks like a really good vibe for sure!!

Like every other year, the list of stuff going on at the event keeps getting bigger...

21 Chili contestants competing in both 'Judge's Choice' and 'People's Choice'... Contests in Guacamole, Salsa, Jello Shots, and Best Booth... DJ all day, Killer band all night... Multiple full bars, multiple beers on tap... Beer pong, horseshoes, darts, poker... Indoor hot tub, pool... Camping, bonfires... Sunday morning breakfast... Great times with friends and memories forever!!

Remember it will be chilly/cold at night, so if you're camping bring plenty of stuff (or someone) to help keep warm!

I'll have my phone on me all weekend and I can check online/email but if you really need to get a hold of me it's best to just call/txt me 310.422.4213 especially if you are looking for the directions and the rest of the info!!

Cook Off Prep Weekend! [09 Sep 2008|11:05am]

justj
It's that time of year that we work our ass off every weekend getting ready for THE Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon!!

This weekend all of us will be out there preparing the property and dragging out all the Cook-Off gear. People ask each year how they can help, this is the cheapest and most appreciated way to donate to the event!! Plus free beer is ALWAYS a good thing!! ;)

Also a bunch of you have asked about making booths this year... You want to get started sooner rather than later... Nothing get's you motivated more than coming out a couple weekends before THE Cook-Off and brainstorming!!

The more fall is in the air, the more excited I get for THE Cook-Off!!

Got questions?

Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon 2008! [31 Aug 2008|05:51pm]

justj

We are offically just a little over a month away from...

THE Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon 2008!!!

The event is annually the second weekend in October... This year it lands on the weekend of October 10-12, with the actual Cook-Off being on October 11th... Now is a good time to decide if you are going to enter The Cook-Off or just come out and enjoy the party... By far the best way to enjoy the event is to enter the competition... Remember there are competitions for Chili (Judges Choice and People's Choice), Guacamole, Salsa and Jello Shots... There is lots more info about the competition on the RULES and the FAQ page...

There is still plenty of time for you out of towners to get good deals on airfare... All you have to do is get here, and we can always find a place for you to crash...You can find more info about that stuff on the STAY page... If you are interested in going in with people to rent a motorhome, now is a good time to also start putting your group together... Those of you that have already bought your plane tickets, make sure you send me a copy of your itineraries... There are quite a few of you that all work at the same places, you better start asking for the time off now so you aren't missing out stuck at home for being the last one to ask!! ;)

Make sure if you are coming that you officially RSVP so that we can keep accurate numbers and prepare (RSVP here, even if you already have elsewhere like myspace or facebook)

This is the time of year that the excitment starts to build for those of us that have been doing this for the past nine years!! Every year is different, you never know what is going to happen!! We can't wait to see you all again this year!

Microwave oven types [10 Jul 2008|10:07pm]
ramba1400

Knowing what type of microwave oven you require for your kitchen is dependant on how much you intend to use it and what you are going to use it for. There are over the range or counter top microwave ovens and each has its advantages, but which one to choose really does depend on how much you are going to it.
An over the range microwave is literally what it says it is attached to or over your conventional oven. This type of microwave is great if you use them to part cook some foods before popping them into your conventional oven to finish the cooking process and color the food item that is being cooked. i know several people who do there jacket potatoes this way and swear that it speeds up the cooking process rapidly. Most people who use their microwave ovens to cook with rather just reheat products seem to prefer this type of microwave oven as it makes it easy to move items that are being prepared between the two ovens. The major issue with this type of microwave oven is that if they break they can be expensive to replace or repair.
Counter top microwave ovens are by far the more popular type of microwave and the main reason for this is that they can be placed anywhere in your kitchen and moved at ay time to suit your needs. These microwave ovens tend to be more versatile and are easy to replace if they break down or you are up grading your kitchen or just up grading your microwave oven. This type of microwave oven suits both people who just reheat using their microwave and people who tend to use their microwaves to prepare foods for their meals.

Don't Just Go Green: Here Comes The Red! [29 Jun 2008|10:07pm]
ramba1400

Ever wondered about the red juicy vegetable that sits pretty in your refrigerator! If your answer is negative, then start appreciating the unique qualities that they store within themselves. Within its core lies the antidote for one of the most threatening of ailments, cancer and heart attacks, to name a few.

This antidote is known as lycopene, a carotenoid, which lends red color to some of the vegetables like tomatoes, watermelons, etc. Besides, lycopene fights free radicals in the body, thereby preventing the occurrence of stroke, heart attack, or exercise-induced asthma. This is, however, only an introduction to the numerous benefits that lycopene has in store for us.

Tomatoes are considered to be one of the richest sources of lycopene, apart from the very good sources in red watermelons, and pink grapefruits. Lycopene is a carotenoid, red in color, which prevents oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, consequently reducing the risk of developing atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. According to a study published in October 1998, daily consumption of tomato products provides at least 40 mg of lycopene, enough to substantially reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. Increased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease is basically associated with high LDL oxidation. Just two glasses of tomato juice a day is a simple solution to attain the appropriate level of lycopene in the blood. Tomato juice is a highly recommended source of lycopene on account of its easy digestibility by the human body. Tomatoes, in the form of ketchup, soups, juice, or paste makes the lycopene easily absorbable on account of chemical changes undergone due to temperature changes.

Over the years, a number of researches have been conducted to test the cancer-preventing ability of lycopene. One of the most revolutionary instances of research on lycopene (in tomatoes or watermelons) and cancer was a large Harvard study released in 1995. It closely observed the eating habits of 47,000 men for six years. Those who had at least 10 weekly servings of tomato-based foods were up to 45 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. In an analysis published (J Natl Cancer Inst 1999 Feb17; 91(4): 317-31), Edward Giovannucci of Harvard Medical School reviewed 72 studies that looked for a link between cancer risk and tomato-rich food. In all, 57-associated tomato intake with a reduced risk, and in 35 of these, the association was strong enough to be considered statistically meaningful.

Researches have also laid rest to the erstwhile claims that lycopene is essential only for men. According to the reports released by the University of Illinois, women with greater lycopene levels have a five-fold lower risk of developing precancerous signs of cervical cancer than women with lower lycopene levels. Articles published in the American Journal of Hypertension have come up with newer benefits of lycopene, especially in tomato and red watermelon. Researches suggest that lycopene can be a possible treatment for mild hypertension. To top it all, lycopene is excellent for the skin as it provides effective resistance against the harmful UV rays of the sun. So don't just let your tomatoes or watermelons sit prettily in the refrigerator! Cook it or juice it, but make sure to consume enough of it to resist all possible ailments. With the benefits of lycopene being acclaimed worldwide, green is no more the only healthy trend among diet freaks. The 'red' is out to rule!

I thought I'd taken more pics during the day, but here's what I've got. It was so much fun meeting people I'd known online for years, along with a couple of new friends, and of course seeing some old friends again. I hope it's not quite as long until we meet again.

OMG!! Can you believe THE Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon 2007 is THIS coming weekend?!?!

Where has the year gone?! Every year this week, we are all running around like crazy doing the final touches... Last weekend was a huge final prep weekend... Thank you so much to everyone that came out to help us with the final details... I had a funny conversation with one of the guys that came out to help last weekend... He said 'every year I just come out and drink and party, I had NO IDEA how much work you guys put into this whole thing'...

There are some great new booths this year, that I think you guys are really going to like... The late drunk nights are going to be interesting to say the least!

Tomorrow the first of the out of state guests come in... It's always amazing to me that people fly in from around the country (well we've even had a couple from out of the country) to come to this!! Regardless, I think it's super cool...

For everyone that is asking what to bring, I will give the standard answer... Bring lot's of tequila and warm clothes for night time!

OH!! I almost forgot, there will be a tattoo guy up there this year too!! If any of you have been itching to get inked, this would be a great time to do it with all your friends! Remember to grab your ideas, and a few bucks so you can get some ink!

I can't wait to see you guys!

Lemme Know if you need the directions...

[booths]

This year's Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon is growing legs and is moving faster than I can keep up!!

There is so much going on around here, I feel like I am totally slacking on my Cook-Off duties this year, I may need some help from some of you old timers as far as answering questions for the newbies and general pimpin!!

I am totally behind on answering emails, please bare with me... Sometimes it's quicker to just txtmsg me (310.422.4213)... Most of the questions can be answered on HarrisHotHouse.com, especially on the FAQ page or in the two public forums (harrishothouse.livejournal.com for the LJ users and groups.myspace.com/harrishothouse for the myspacers).

A lot of people have been telling me that they are coming this year, that haven't RSVP'd... Please remember to visit the RSVP page even if you have told any of us you are coming... It is really important for us to keep a running total of guests/contestants for all kinds of logistical reasons...

It is super important to hear from those of you that are actually planning on entering any of the contests... Remember you can enter Chili, Guacamole, Salsa, Jello shooters or any combination of them all!! But we still need to know as far in advance as possible so please fill out the form on the RSVP page...

This year there also seems to be a lot of people wanting to build their own special booths... We will be out at Harris Hot House every weekend between now and the actual Cook-Off doing prep work... If you are planning on building a special booth, you may want to take advantage of one of these prep weekends to get a space and get pre-setup... Of course we always welcome any volunteers on prep weekends I know a few of you have been asking me how you can help... Basically if you want to help, just show up out there any weekend between now and the Cook-Off and we will put you to work!! Since there are so many people building 'real' booths this year, it's another reason we need you to RSVP and let us know about your booth so we can plan space for you...

I've been asked by a few people about tables and stuff... Really if you aren't making chili, and just making salsa/guac/jello you don't need a 'booth'... Most people just borrow space for a few mins from one of the bigger booths... We have quite a few folding tables that we can set up for you, but they will be first come first serve so if you have your own try to figure out how to bring it...

[tent city]

Like every other year we are going to rent motorhomes to caravan out from our house in Redondo Beach up to THE Cook-Off... If I was only a guest of this event, the motorhome would be THE ONLY way I would want to go! Not only for the ride up where you can drink and hang out, but once you get there it's a warm soft place to crash... Every year it seems like there are extra beds that don't get used, which I never understand cause the cost just isn't that much when it's divided up by the number of people that can sleep in it... Everyone that is interested in 'going in on' the price of the motorhomes to sleep in, lemme know ASAP so we can get a count... You don't have to 'go in' on it to be able to ride up with us on Friday... Also for those of you that are renting your own, I will ALWAYS recommend El Monte RV over any of the others... They just have the best coaches for the best prices over all... Maybe they will give us a discount if we rent enough of them?...

Will everyone that has ever won something at THE Cook-Off raise their hands? Or at least will someone tell me who all the past winners have been? I don't know why I don't have a master list, I suppose I could go back through all the pics and try to figure out who is winning what, but hopefully you guys can help remember!

Finally, remember that the best way to enjoy THE Cook-Off is to make a weekend out of it... There is so much going on that weekend it is hard to see it all... This year besides the actual Cook-Off on Saturday, there is going to be a really good Live band, Poker, Horseshoes, Beer Pong, Darts, Karaoke, Hot Tubbin, Swimming and of course plenty of partying!! Also no one that has ever stayed over for the huge breakfast Sunday morning has ever been disappointed, it's just about my favorite part of the whole weekend!!

I will try to do better at keeping you all updated, like I said life is crazy these days and is swamping me but I won't let it get in the way of making this year THE BEST COOK-OFF EVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRRRR~! ;)

Can you feel it in the air?! You must be able to, cause I have been asked about THE 8th Annual Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon no less than 10 times in the past three days, three times already this morning!!

I know a couple people have already booked their flights, and there are a ton of locals that are getting more and more excited!!

I love the new energy and life of the whole event, after last year being 'BEST COOK-OFF EVER', I can't wait for this year's!!

I will make sure to update the dates on the websites tonight, but right now the main question seems to be 'When is THE 8th Annual Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon?. It is annually on the Second weekend in October. That makes this year's October 12th-14th, with the actual Cook-Off being on the 13th...

Of course there will also be lots of 'prep' weekends between now and October for those of you that want to help us get ready for the whole thing, I'll be sure to keep you all in the loop of the goings on!

For those of you heading out to THE Harris Hot House Chili Cook-Off & Guac-A-Thon this weekend, remember that is kinda chilly up there right now, so bring some warmer clothes... It doesn't look like the rain is going to reach us, but even if it does, it would only be short showers, no big deal...

See you guys up there, if you need anything, hit me up

We just had a couple friends over talking about THE Cook-Off...

Both of them started asking if we were interested in sponsorships, cause they both have companies... We said of course we are, we are always willing to let people help out ;)...

They are both usually true to their word, so if they actually produce it could mean even more that this will be the best year ever!!

Not to mention that combined they are good for easily another 30 guests, which as far as I am concerned, the more the merrier!! That seems to be how this year is going, everyone is talking about bringing GROUPS rather than just a buddy... I think it's time for the rest of you to start your full blown recruiting efforts so that your group isn't dwarfed by someone elses ;)...

Oh and girls, you can ask coral for sure, but I haven't met many girls that haven't thought the one 'sponsor' friend and his friends aren't all good lookin ;)

I have to say it is pretty cool that even though I have been too busy to start pimpin The Cook-Off, some of the rest of you are already are well into Cook-Off mode!!...

I would say that I have been contacted by more people this year than any other by this time... Maybe I should keep quiet about it more often, you know the whole 'if you have it, they will come' thing ;)... With each email, I get more and more excited about getting to see old friends!..

Anyway, I updated the dates on the website, it is the weekend of October 14th this year...

As usual, some of you still haven't given me your pics from last year, so the pics still aren't updated, but I'll let yall fight amongst yerselves about that ;)...

It's time to start tellin your friends, and start making your travel plans... I love it when we have something to look forward too :)
